Metal Weight Calculator

Use this free Metal Weight Calculator to find the weight of steel, aluminium, copper and other metals in seconds. Choose a rod, pipe, sheet or square bar, pick the metal, enter the dimensions in millimetres, and get the weight in kilograms instantly, with the volume shown as well.

It is ideal for fabrication estimates, purchase orders, transport planning and checking supplier weights. Standard densities are built in, so you do not need to look up values or do the maths by hand.

What is a Metal Weight Calculator?

A metal weight calculator estimates the weight of a metal piece from its shape, size and density. Weight equals volume multiplied by density. For a rod, volume is pi multiplied by (diameter divided by 2) squared multiplied by length. For a pipe, it is pi multiplied by ((outer diameter divided by 2) squared minus (inner diameter divided by 2) squared) multiplied by length. For a sheet, it is length multiplied by width multiplied by thickness, and for a square bar it is side squared multiplied by length.

Densities used here are steel 7,850, stainless steel 8,000, aluminium 2,700, copper 8,960 and brass 8,500 kg/m3. Enter all dimensions in millimetres and the tool converts them to metres before calculating, so the result is in kilograms.

How to Use the Metal Weight Calculator (Step by Step)

  1. Choose shape (rod, pipe, sheet or square bar).
  2. Select metal (density fills automatically).
  3. Enter needed dimensions in mm.
  4. Press Calculate.

Example Calculation

Steel round rod, diameter 20 mm, length 1,000 mm: volume is 0.000314 m3, so weight is 2.466 kg. Check it yourself: pi multiplied by (0.01 m) squared multiplied by 1 m gives 0.000314 m3, multiplied by 7,850 kg/m3 gives 2.466 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What density should I use for mild steel?

7,850 kg/m3 is the standard figure used for mild and carbon steel weight calculations.

How do I weigh a pipe with this tool?

Choose Pipe, enter outer diameter, inner diameter (outer minus 2 x wall thickness) and length.

Why does my supplier’s weight differ slightly?

Rolling tolerances, actual thickness variation and density differences between grades cause small variations, usually within a few percent.

Can I calculate in feet and inches?

Convert to mm first (1 inch = 25.4 mm) – keeping one unit system avoids the commonest weight errors.
