What is an Atmakaraka Calculator?
In Jaimini astrology, chara karakas are temporary significators assigned by the degree a planet has travelled in its sign. The planet with the highest effective degree becomes the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul and the self, and its placement in the navamsa chart, called karakamsa, is read in depth.
Formula: Jaimini chara-karaka (7-karaka scheme): effective degree = absolute longitude mod 30 for each of the 7 grahas. Rank highest to lowest: Atmakaraka, Amatyakaraka, Bhratrukaraka, Matrukaraka, Putrakaraka, Gnatikaraka, and LOWEST = Darakaraka. Rahu is not used in the 7-karaka scheme.
Please enter sidereal (Lahiri) longitudes from your kundli. This tool ranks the degrees you provide; it does not compute a birth chart.
How to Use the Atmakaraka Calculator (Step by Step)
- Get sidereal longitudes of the 7 planets from your birth chart software.
- Enter one planet per line as Planet, longitude (0-360).
- Press Calculate - the first planet in the ranking is your Atmakaraka.
Example Calculation
Longitudes Sun 105.5, Moon 222.3, Mars 68.9, Mercury 191.2, Jupiter 305.7, Venus 129.4, Saturn 260.1 give effective degrees Saturn 20.10, Sun 15.50, Moon 12.30, Mercury 11.20, Venus 9.40, Mars 8.90, Jupiter 5.70. The ranking starts with Saturn, so Atmakaraka = Saturn (20.10 degrees, highest).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What does Atmakaraka represent?
The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in its sign; in Jaimini astrology it signifies the soul's purpose and the self, and its sign in navamsa (karakamsa) is read deeply.
Why is the highest degree chosen?
Chara karakas are 'temporary' significators assigned by degree order - the planet that has travelled furthest in its sign takes the top role of Atmakaraka.
Tropical or sidereal longitudes?
Use sidereal (Vedic/Lahiri) values; tropical longitudes are shifted by roughly 24 degrees and can change the ranking.
What if two planets are within a degree of each other?
Close degrees are an edge case with classical tie rules; have such charts confirmed by an experienced astrologer.
