Shadbala Calculator

Use this free Shadbala Calculator to total the six Shadbala components for any planet and judge its strength in virupas and rupas. Just select the planet, enter its six bala values from your computed chart, and press Calculate for an instant total, rupa conversion and strength ratio.

The result also tells you whether the planet meets its classical minimum requirement, so you can compare planets in the same chart on a consistent basis without doing the addition by hand.

What is a Shadbala Calculator?

Shadbala is the six-fold strength system of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It combines Sthana Bala (positional strength), Dig Bala (directional strength), Kala Bala (temporal strength), Cheshta Bala (motional strength), Naisargika Bala (natural strength) and Drik Bala (aspectual strength) into a single total, measured in virupas, where 60 virupas make 1 rupa.

Formula: Shadbala (BPHS) = Sthana + Dig + Kala + Cheshta + Naisargika + Drik Bala, all in virupas; Rupas = virupas / 60; strength ratio = total / planet minimum (1.0 or more = meets minimum; published minimums: Sun 390, Moon 360, Mars 300, Mercury 420, Jupiter 390, Venus 330, Saturn 300).

Important: this tool totals the six components YOU supply from a computed chart — it does not compute Shadbala from a birth date alone.

How to Use the Shadbala Calculator (Step by Step)

  1. Compute the chart in Vedic software; note the six bala values for the planet.
  2. Select the planet (loads its minimum).
  3. Enter the six values.
  4. Press Calculate.

Example Calculation

Sun with 180/40/90/30/60/20: 180 + 40 + 90 + 30 + 60 + 20 = 420 virupas. 420 / 60 = 7.00 rupas. 420 / 390 = 1.077, so the result is: Total Shadbala: 420.00 virupas = 7.00 rupas, and the planet meets its minimum strength.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Shadbala?

Shadbala is the six-fold strength system of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It measures a planet’s positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual strength in virupas; 60 virupas make 1 rupa.

What is a good Shadbala ratio?

A ratio of 1.0 means the planet exactly meets its minimum requirement. Above 1 is considered strong, and the highest-ratio planet is usually the strongest in the chart.

Why do different softwares show different Shadbala?

Ayanamsa choice, sunrise definition and Cheshta Bala conventions differ between programs, so totals vary slightly. Use one system consistently.

Can this tool compute Shadbala from my birth date alone?

No. Full computation needs planetary positions and several time-based factors. This tool totals and judges the six components you supply from a chart.
